It
is important that you understand how to administer a good quality
spirometry test. This Quick Start will help you get started. Consult the
NPB-5OO User's Manual for more detailed instructions and safety
information.

spirometer will display the ~option ~"START TEST". Press the
ENTER key to continue. Take the flow sensor and smoothly pass the bar
coded edge through the sensor reader as shown. The sensor can be passed in
either direction, but must travel all the way across the slot. Upon
completion. the display will read "ANY KEY TO TEST". The
spirometer is now ready to begin the test.
The
spirometer will display, "STEADY SENSOR, WAIT" This means that
the sensor should not be moved during this time.
Coaching
the Patient
Before
continuing you should coach the patient on how to perform the test.
Actually demonstrating the test using your own sensor is strongly
recommended for patients who have never done this test before. When the
spirometer meter displays, "START TEST", it is ready for the
patient to begin the test.
Unlike
many other diagnostic measurements such as blood pressure or cholesterol,
spirometry is a test that requires active participation to get reliable
results. You play an important role in this process by coaching the
patient how to perform the test. This is not difficult, but it does
require familiarity with the spirometer and some practice to learn.
