It is important that you understand how to administer a good quality spirometry test. This Quick Start will help you get started. Consult the NPB-5OO User's Manual for more detailed instructions and safety information.

Simplicity™ Spirometry System

Batteries
Two AA batteries are included, Install the batteries in the battery compartment located on the back of the spirometer.

FSII Connections
The spirometer is shipped with the pressure tube connected. Connect an FSII Flow Sensor to the end of the pressure tube.

Power
To turn the spirometer on or off, press and hold the OPTIONS key. The spirometer automatically turns off in 5 minutes, if no keys are pressed.

Date and Time
Only during the initial setup are the date and time screens displayed after power up. To change date and time at any other time, select the CONFIGURE option.

Use the right and left arrow keys to move the cursor to the value to be changed. The up and down arrows are used to change the value of the number above the cursor. When the correct date is displayed, press ENTER to move to the time screen. Repeat the procedure for time.

Other Configuration Items
After date and time have been set other configuration items are available. If you will be printing test results, set the printer type here. Refer to the User's Manual for more detailed instructions.

Entering Patient Information
After setting date and time and entering other configuration items, press ENTER. At the NEW PATIENT option, enter patient information using the arrow keys as you did for date and time.

~Note: If there is test data already in the spirometer, the prompt ARE YOU SURE? "YES/NO" will be displayed. By selecting YES, all data will be deleted.

~Note: Test data is saved or 30 minutes. Test data is deleted if the New Patient option is selected or if more than 30 minutes have passed since testing.

Swiping the Sensor
The spirometer will display the ~option ~"START TEST". Press the ENTER key to continue. Take the flow sensor and smoothly pass the bar coded edge through the sensor reader as shown. The sensor can be passed in either direction, but must travel all the way across the slot. Upon completion. the display will read "ANY KEY TO TEST". The spirometer is now ready to begin the test.

The spirometer will display, "STEADY SENSOR, WAIT" This means that the sensor should not be moved during this time.

Coaching the Patient
Before continuing you should coach the patient on how to perform the test. Actually demonstrating the test using your own sensor is strongly recommended for patients who have never done this test before. When the spirometer meter displays, "START TEST", it is ready for the patient to begin the test.

Unlike many other diagnostic measurements such as blood pressure or cholesterol, spirometry is a test that requires active participation to get reliable results. You play an important role in this process by coaching the patient how to perform the test. This is not difficult, but it does require familiarity with the spirometer and some practice to learn.
